Action Alert

May 5, 2002

The following is from the folks at WV Rivers Coalition.... Please make the call if you can!! Sorry for the late notice! Save Our Waters! IMMEDIATE ACTION NEEDED

Please call EPA Administrator Christine Whitman today and ask her not to change the Clean Water Act fill rule to allow waste dumps in West Virginia’s waters!

West Virginia Rivers Coalition just learned from our friends in Washington, D.C. that the Administrator may very soon sign (and thereby finalize) the change to the definition of “fill material” that would allow the Army Corps of Engineers to permit waste disposal from mountaintop removal coal mining, hardrock mining, demolition debris -- even garbage disposal -- in West Virginia’s streams, rivers and wetlands. We are not 100% sure that this will happen today but it could -- so let’s try to make sure it doesn't!

CALL WHITMAN TODAY AT 202-564-4700

(Back up numbers: Deputy Administrator 202-564-4711; Chief of Staff 202-564-6999)

Ask to speak to the Administrator or to leave a short message:

* Ask her not to sign the fill rule and destroy West Virginia’s rivers and streams. * Ask her not to allow the Corps to permit industries to dump their wastes in waters. * Ask her not to sign what would be the most destructive Clean Water Act rule change in decades.
