Testimonials About Voting Problems Needed ASAP, Legislative Hearing Sept. 14

WV-CAG is gathering information and trying to identify voters who experienced problems with electronic voting machines and want to share them with the legislature. If you have a personal testimonial to share or know someone who does, please contact Julie ASAP at (304) 346-5891 or julie@wvcag.org.  A legislative committee will be hearing from voters at a hearing on September 14, 2009 from 4PM-6PM, Room 410M, State Capitol, Charleston.  Although this is not a public hearing, we encourage everyone interested in the integrity and verifiability of our elections to attend.  Read on for more information.

Background:
Members of the state legislature's Joint Joint Judiciary Committee have been charged with looking at a number of issues related to voting machines, including the security and reliability of direct record electronic machines (DREs), whether their use should be phased out as the existing machines near the end of their useful life and whether transitioning to alternative systems would save the state and counties money.  During the August interims, the study committee heard from University of Pennsylvania security researcher about the findings of the EVEREST study, a federally funded review of voting systems used in Ohio and throughout the country. (Click here to read coverage from the Charleston Gazette.) The study led to the Ohio Secretary of State to recommend eliminating the use of Direct Recording Electronic (DREs) voting machines, including the ES&S iVotronic that is currently used in WV elections. The voting machine issue will be taken up again on September 14, 2009 and the committee is interested in hearing from voters who experienced problems during the 2008 election.  WV-CAG is gathering information and trying to identify voters who experienced problems and want to share them with the legislature. If you have a personal testimonial to share or know someone who does, please contact Julie ASAP at (304) 346-5891 or julie@wvcag.org so we can connect you with committee staff.
