Support Fairness at Patriot: UMWA Rally & March Sept. 11 in Charleston

On Tuesday, September 11 to United Mine Workers of America (UMWA) will be holding a  rally and march in Charleston in protest of the recent bankruptcy filing by the Patriot Coal Company and the impact it will have on UMWA workers and retirees.

"Patriot was a company created to fail," the latest UMW Journal says. It relates that Peabody Energy put its unionized mines into Patriot in 2007, making Patriot liable for pensions and medical insurance for multitudes of retired West Virginia miners. A federal filing said Patriot accepted $617 million in retiree medical obligations.

As Charleston Gazette reporter Ken Ward Jr. outlined, the fate of about 2,000 current Patriot union miners in West Virginia and Kentucky -- plus more than 10,000 retirees and another 10,000 dependents -- hinges on the bankruptcy case. If pensions and health insurance are halted, enormous hardship would result.

Please attend Tuesday's rally and march to show your support for Fairness at Patriot.

12:30 PM - Rally at Haddad River Front Park, Charleston, WV

1:30 PM – March from Haddad Park to Robert C. Byrd Federal Building for Demonstration and Speakers
