Mingo County residents to deliver letters demanding transparency and an in-person TransGas hearing from the WV DEP

Virtual format had limited participation, leaving the impacted community in the dark

Charleston, W.Va. – In July, the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WV DEP) released two identical draft permits for planned data centers that TransGas Development Systems will operate. TransGas intends to build data centers at 22 Mine Road, near Holden in Logan County, and at the Twisted Gun Golf Course, near Gilbert in Mingo County.

Local residents demanded a public hearing. The WV DEP held a virtual meeting on Monday, August 18, which many residents were unable to participate in due to registration issues, limited internet access, and a lack of computer resources.

Community members are calling for an in-person meeting in Mingo County, where residents affected by the plant can voice their concerns. The comment period is scheduled to end Friday, August 22, at 5 PM.

Area residents will be delivering letters to the WV DEP from their neighbors, urging the WV DEP to do more to ensure meaningful community engagement about TransGas’ plans and to extend the comment period.

  • Who: Mingo County residents concerned about planned data centers
  • What: Delivering letters from their neighbors calling on WV DEP to hold an in-person meeting in their community
  • When: Wednesday, August 20, at 2 PM
  • Where: WV DEP Headquarters, 601 57th Street SE, Charleston, WV 25304

Mingo County residents want WV DEP to visit their community to address shortcomings of the virtual format, and they want Adam Victor and TransGas to be more transparent about their plans for the community.
