Let Us Speak! Protect Public Hearings

The 2025 West Virginia Legislative Session begins Wednesday, Feb. 12, and the House of Delegates is expected to vote quickly on HR1, which includes extensive rule changes, some of which will make the process more deliberate and represent a positive change. Other changes will eliminate the ability of any citizen to call for a public hearing, moving those opportunities for input to committee meetings and making them far less accessible.

The West Virginia House of Delegates has long been called the People’s House, largely because of its accessibility and rules allowing public hearings on bills. Without agendas posted in advance, most West Virginians will lack sufficient notice to attend and have their voice heard.

Take action below and encourage your Delegate and Speaker Hanshaw to amend HR1 to preserve public hearings, provide enough notice for West Virginians to arrange to be at the Capitol, and to ensure chairs cannot choose who can and cannot speak on a bill.
