WV CAG member Mary Lickert sent an SOS regarding the need to protect Social Security. Mary says:
I found a clear [explanation of the plan to privatize Social Security] from two US senators [Adam Schiff and Sheldon Whitehouse], one member of the House [Rep. John Larson] and a 25 year Social Security Administration veteran. [Former SSA Commissioner] Martin O’Malley is also included sharing his concerns about what the agency is facing and warning of a crash! Please help get the information out.
[We must] write and call our WV senators with a demand to not betray American seniors. We paid into a system our entire working lives, along with employers. That money is not to be turned over to Vanguard or Goldman Sachs. Our so-called representatives must demand immediate restoration of staffing and NO privatization. Any inaction or silence is a sign of betrayal.
In addition, we must demand that they cease massive cuts across the board — to food and medicine for the needy or privatize anything else.
How about restoring our public square? They cannot have their massive tax cuts.

Every day brings new headlines about the chaos Elon Musk is inflicting on the Social Security Administration. Musk’s DOGE lapdogs are threatening the foundations of the system that generations of Americans have built to preserve our ability to retire with dignity, all to give the richest man in the world a bigger tax cut. Congress must act!
Add your voice to demand that Congress Trump-proof Social Security!
In mid-February, Musk fired Social Security’s acting commissioner and replaced her with a DOGE lackey. Untrained young DOGE staffers immediately began downloading and poring through the American people’s personal Social Security data, making it far less secure in the process.
In the weeks since, at the behest of DOGE staffers, Social Security has fired and pushed out thousands of experienced Social Security workers, including senior leaders. This is a massive loss of expertise and institutional knowledge.
These are the workers who make Social Security work. With 10,000 people retiring every single day, we need to strengthen the Social Security Administration, not dismantle it!
DOGE has also announced plans to close nearly 50 local Social Security offices so far. And this might be only the beginning — DOGE is reportedly considering laying off half of Social Security’s workforce and closing every single field office.
Martin O’Malley, Social Security’s most recent Senate-confirmed commissioner, predicts that these actions will result in a “system collapse” within the “next 30 to 90 days.” That means seniors and people with disabilities won’t get their hard-earned benefits!

Workers at the Social Security Administration are working to make sure that everyone gets the benefits they’ve paid for, but the misinformation and attacks from the richest man in the world make that harder every day.
Congress needs to act now to save Social Security, before it’s too late. Rep. John Larson (D-CT), ranking member of the House Social Security subcommittee, has introduced two new bills designed to protect our Social Security system from Musk and Trump:
- The Keeping Our Field Offices Open Act will put a moratorium on the closure of Social Security Field Offices for the rest of the Trump Administration
- The Protecting Americans’ Social Security Data Act will block Elon Musk and his cronies’ access to sensitive beneficiary data and strengthen oversight and civil penalties for any privacy and disclosure violations of Social Security beneficiaries’ personal information
In addition, Larson has introduced a Resolution of Inquiry to compel President Trump to disclose to Congress information about DOGE activity at SSA and any plans to close field offices or cut staff.
Congress must pass all three pieces of legislation immediately!
