WV DEP Hosting Long-awaited In-Person Public Hearing in Gilbert

Gilbert, W.Va. – In July, the West Virginia Department of Environmental Protection (WV DEP) released two identical draft permits for planned data centers that TransGas Development Systems will operate. TransGas intends to build data centers at 22 Mine Road, near Holden in Logan County, and at the Twisted Gun Golf Course, near Gilbert in Mingo County.

Residents demanded a public hearing. The WV DEP held a virtual meeting on Monday, August 18, which many residents were unable to participate in due to registration issues, limited internet access, and a lack of computer resources.

Two days later, on Wednesday, August 20, community members hand-delivered a message to the WV DEP Headquarters in Charleston: our communities deserve clean air and water, and we deserve in-person meetings in Gilbert and Logan to discuss how these facilities put both at risk. From the start, you’ve underestimated and dismissed our communities’ concerns.

Thanks to residents’ pressure, the DEP could not ignore the demands for public input and granted a Gilbert hearing. The hearing will include a presentation of each permit, a portion for questions and answers, and time for submitting verbal comments for the record. What remains to be determined is how much consideration will be given to the resident’s input.

  • Who: WV Department of Environmental Protection

  • What: Public Hearing on the permits for TransGas Development Systems’ two data center proposals in Mingo County

  • When: Thursday, September 18, from 4 pm to 8 pm

  • Where: Larry Jo Harless Community Center, 202 Larry Joe Harless Dr, Gilbert, WV 25621

Mingo and Logan County residents demand a real say on the decision to allow TransGas Development Systems to build these facilities in their backyard.
