West Virginians are facing an avoidable crisis. During the shutdown, the USDA will suspend November SNAP benefits, putting 279,000 West Virginians—one in six—and 42 million Americans at risk of hunger.
This crisis is the result of a policy decision, not a lack of funds.
During past shutdowns, the USDA kept food assistance programs running with contingency funds. Nearly two-thirds of these funds remain available. The Administration should use them now to prevent hunger as Thanksgiving nears.
We can’t allow President Trump and Secretary Rollins to play politics with food. Congress works for us — let them know what you want.
