Reports to: Executive Director

About the Role:

  • This position is full time, and occasionally requires long or irregular hours, including some nights, weekends and holidays. There is opportunity to flex irregular hours worked.
  • This role is a member of the climate and energy team.
  • This role is based out of West Virginia with occasional travel to our Charleston office.

  • Proven experience in community organizing and coalition-building
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills via email, phone, online meeting platforms, notetaking, facilitation, and public forums
  • Proven ability to work independently well as a team member and to facilitate/coordinate diverse groups of people
  • Demonstrated capacity to meet deadlines and manage multiple tasks with attention to detail
  • Excellent personal accountability, self-motivation and follow through skills
  • Skillful in discerning and navigating power dynamics and building trusting relationships at both the grassroots and grasstops levels
  • Experience building relationships with and navigating the West Virginia Public Service Commission and/or the State Legislature
  • Knowledge of various advocacy and organizing approaches, the public policy making process, and equitable development issues
  • Demonstrated experience in climate and energy policy, advocacy, or organizing
  • Understanding of climate science, renewable energy technologies, and environmental policy
  • Clarity in understanding historic and systemic oppression, racism and white supremacy
  • Demonstrated commitment and passion for environmental, racial and economic justice

Benefits:

  • The salary for this role will be $50,000 to $55,000, depending on experience.
  • Health insurance stipend of $600/month
  • Ability to flex time when working outside the standard 9-5 office hours
  • Paid time off and holidays including a full office closure from December 24th-January 1st

Responsibilities:

  • (40% of time) Coordinate the West Virginia Climate Alliance (WVCA), including but not limited to:
    • convening the entire coalition regularly;
    • maintaining and updating WVCA website; 
    • organizing in-person and virtual gatherings;
    • conducting relevant research and developing relevant educational materials;
    • communication of weekly updates, and;
    • reporting of outcomes to WVCAG climate and energy team.
  • (40% of time) Represent WVCAG within West Virginians for Energy Freedom (WVEF) by:
    • participating in coalition calls and working groups;
    • conducting policy and legislative research, educational materials, and communications, and;
    • reporting outcomes to WVCAG climate and energy team.
  • (20% of time) Support the climate and energy team and WVCAG’s basebuilding by:
    • building and maintaining relationships with community organizations, activists, allies, and community members;
    • delegating relevant updates to individual organizations within the team or coalitions;
    • organizing events, canvasses, community meetings, forums, and more to educate and engage the public on climate and energy issues;
    • collaborating with WVCAG’s communications manager to develop materials relevant to organizer’s programmatic and coalition work, and;
    • reporting regularly on project and coalition outcomes to appropriate team members across the climate and energy and organizing programs.
