Back in July, I attended the People’s Action Strategic Planning Session in Minneapolis, MN. These events are so inspiring and educational. I love learning from other organizations across the country what they are doing to build their base and raise awareness in their communities. We looked to the future and made plans to continue the vital work of bringing power to the people!

We ended the weekend with a Care Over Cost direct action in front of UnitedHealth Group Headquarters. This was our second action with United Health Group, which happens to be the nation’s 4th largest company by revenue. However, while reporting over 7 billion in profits each quarter this year, their rate of denials and delays of care have skyrocketed. This means their profits are coming from denying procedures and medications from patients. We think, “That ain’t right!”.

I was among eleven other organizers and activists who risked arrest to illuminate the severity of this situation. With the help and direction of our amazing team of volunteers who served as marshals, the eleven of us were arrested safely and without incident. Our efforts were successful, and we gained a lot of press coverage. Telling our stories and taking back our power is what moves the needle forward in fights against big corporations who stand against our best interests and focus on profit over people.

Do you have questions about all of the ads and messaging you are seeing about Medicare Advantage plans? We invite you to attend our virtual Care Over Cost community meeting on Sept. 11 at 7 p.m. to hear from an expert speaker and participate in a Q&A session. Your voice matters. Register now to join the movement to give power back to the people of West Virginia! Your participation is crucial. If you have any questions, please don’t hesitate to contact me at mindy@wvcag.org.
