Friday, as a key deadline for legislation approached, the House Health Committee took up and passed a bill (HB 5297) to cut off the only way for suicidal transgender West Virginia kids to get gender-affirming care . HB 5297 is a total ban on gender-affirming care that would leave children diagnosed with gender dysphoria who are at risk of harming themselves with no in-state medical care options. Throughout the session, lawmakers have been talking about the importance of protecting parental rights. And yet this bill strips parents of the right to ensure their children can receive the medically-necessary, life-saving care they need to survive.
