As the opioid crisis has turned into a full-blown national public health epidemic, these same companies have sought profit from treating overdoses and addiction. This report examines how the biggest opioid profiteers operate, and offers a roadmap for how policymakers and communities can fight back. More

Without disclosure, we don’t know what conflicts of interest our judges may have
Without common-sense disclosure laws, anyone could end up across the courtroom from another other party who has given hundreds of thousands of dollars to a dark money group supporting the judge ruling on their case. And they wouldn't even have the information, to ask the judge to recuse himself or herself. More

Health Care Repeal Roller Coaster Rolls On
On January 1st it seemed inevitable that we would see the ACA repealed within months, if not weeks. Today, the public has little to no appetite for another attempt at repeal, and the Congress knows it. Health care as a right has entered the discussion, and grassroots groups around the country are growing in size and influence. We should be proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish, for it’s only the beginning of what is possible. More

Coalition Opposes FirstEnergy’s Bad Deal for WV
WVCAG’s Energy Efficient West Virginia (EEWV) project has helped launch a coalition called West Virginians For Energy Freedom (WV4EF) to oppose FirstEnergy’s plan to transfer the obsolete Pleasants Power Plant to Mon Power and Potomac Edison. West Virginians don’t want to bail out FirstEnergy Corp. and its shareholders, and we shouldn’t have to! More

Trump ‘fraud’ commission is a tool for voter suppression
The Presidential Election Integrity Commission has no credibility and is a pretext for voter suppression. This waste of government resources and invasion of our privacy is all being done in an attempt to suppress people’s right to vote.  West Virginians and our state officials should refuse to cooperate in any way with this sham commission. Budget Battle Over (For Now)
West Virginia dodged the bullet at the last possible moment. However, this is not a budget to celebrate. It cuts higher education and Medicaid and doesn’t raise enough new revenue to keep this annual fight over cuts v. revenue from playing out again next year and into the future. More

A Cost Too High: The Financial Harm of the Republican Plan to Eliminate Health Care
The Republican-led Congress has launched a rapid process of eliminating health coverage for 184,000 residents of West Virginia by repealing the Affordable Care Act (ACA). These cuts will severely reduce income to health facilities and result in lost jobs across sectors. The cuts also will come at severe cost to the state budget. More

James A. Haught: Liberals are the future
In the chaotic presidential campaign, the remarkable popularity of Democratic Socialist Bernie Sanders spotlights a large, not-always-recognized vein of liberal political sympathy in America. Suddenly, the L-word is popular again -- not an embarrassment to be avoided. That’s great, I think, because progressives have been the driving force behind most social improvements in western civilization. More
