Tell Lawmakers: Protect Consumers from Shady Car Dealers and Debt Collectors
Two-for-one special on actions you can take now to protect consumers in West Virginia! SB 556 and SB 563 are a pair of bills pending in the Senate Judiciary Committee that would gut the West Virginia Consumer Credit Protection Act (WVCCPA) and allow predatory debt collectors to run wild. The House Judiciary Committee is considering a bill (SB 216) that lets shady car dealers sell lemons without much risk of consequences, leaving buyers holding the bag. More

Assuming that a certain number are companions to ones in the other chamber, let’s say that makes over a thousand attempts to add to, change, or eliminate functions of our government. Next Tuesday is the last day to introduce bills in the house. The following Monday the 20th is the last in the Senate. Then the countdown clock begins to the April 8th end of the session. It can’t happen soon enough. More

The 82nd West Virginia Legislature Scorecard
The 82nd West Virginia Legislature is made up of the 2015 and 2016 legislative sessions. It was unique in that for the first time since the middle of the last century, conservatives had control of both the House of Delegates and the state Senate. Needless to say, it was not a two year stretch of progressive lawmaking. This is one of the reasons WV Citizen Action Group decided to revive its legislative scorecard. Citizens need to know how their elected representatives voted on issues of importance, especially before the upcoming election. More

Add your name; urge the CFPB to issue a strong payday lending rule!

This spring the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (CFBP) will issue a rule to regulate the payday lending industry. Payday lenders are aggressively lobbying the CFPB and Congress to weaken and delay the rule. More

Ask Governor Tomblin to veto the voter ID bill ASAP
On the last day of session, the legislature passed HB 4013, a bill that would require voters to provide identification at the polls. While automatic voter registration was amended into the bill, the fact that voter ID discriminates against minorities, students, low-income individuals, and seniors still stands. Now the bill's fate lies in the hands of Governor Tomblin who can either sign it into law or veto it by March 30th. More

Oppose H.R. 4731, the “Refugee Program Integrity Restoration Act of 2016”
The undersigned 234 organizations strongly oppose H.R. 4731, the “Refugee Program Integrity Restoration Act of 2016.” This proposed legislation would dismantle the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program, which has been a critical humanitarian and diplomacy tool for over three decades. With more than 60 million refugees and displaced people around the world, it is critically important that the U.S. demonstrates global leadership by welcoming refugees. Enacting legislation that would send the message that refugees are not welcome here is a sharp departure from our nation’s character as a beacon of freedom and our history as a country founded by refugees and immigrants.
