WVCAG’s Energy Efficient West Virginia (EEWV) project has helped launch a coalition called West Virginians For Energy Freedom (WV4EF) to oppose FirstEnergy’s plan to transfer the obsolete Pleasants Power Plant to Mon Power and Potomac Edison. West Virginians don’t want to bail out FirstEnergy Corp. and its shareholders, and we shouldn’t have to! More

The last Saturday in April was a scorcher with temperatures in the 90’s, as we gathered in Charleston for a ‘sister’ march to the People’s Climate March. Despite the heat, we nearly 400 folks from around the state assembled and marched to a rally at the state Capitol in solidarity with the national march in DC. More

We have two rally and march events planned for our area, and for our friends in the eastern panhandle, the main event is just a couple hours away. Next Thursday, May 4th, we will rally inside the Capitol for a budget that protects West Virginia’s families from drastic budget cuts and tax increases on those of us least able to afford it. Capital Eye Update: Wins and Losses
This past week was a mixed bag of wins and losses at the Legislature. In the House, a broadband access bill was passed, stricter voter ID requirements were rejected and automatic voter registration (AVR) was saved. In the Senate, the tank bill passed, and the Cancer Creek bill is advancing. A medical cannabis bill was passed by the Senate Health and Human Resources (HHR) Committee, but consumer protections are at risk. On the federal scene, a health care disaster was narrowly averted when the House failed to pass TrumpCare. More

Capital Eye: What a Week!
By week’s end, the Senate had introduced 585 bills and the House 934 for a total of 1519. Assuming that a certain number are companions to ones in the other chamber, let’s say that makes over a thousand attempts to add to, change, or eliminate functions of our government. Next Tuesday is the last day to introduce bills in the house. The following Monday the 20th is the last in the Senate. Then the countdown clock begins to the April 8th end of the session. It can’t happen soon enough. More

Today, President Obama will make his way to Charleston’s East End to discuss the overwhelming problem of opioid abuse and overdose in the state. The East End Family Resource Center will host the president in the Roosevelt Neighborhood Center building near the offices of WV Citizen Action Group and Energy Efficient West Virginia (EEWV). One of the problems cited as leading to widespread prescription drug abuse has the sluggish economy in West Virginia, but right across the street from where the President is speaking, residents have taken steps to improve their homes and create new jobs in energy efficiency. More

Bait & Switch – Promised Rate Decrease Turns into $96 Million Hike
The West Virginia Supreme Court of Appeals approved a PSC order that passed on to WV utility customers the $800 million dollar cost of the Harrison power plant. The PSC order upheld by the Court claimed the net impact of the 2013 sale of the Harrison Plant (from one of First Energy’s Ohio holdings to its Mon Power WV subsidiary) would be a $16 million decrease in consumer’s electric rates. One week after getting the Court’s approval, Mon Power now wants to increase its rates by $96 million. More

Public Service Commission Friday, contending that a proposed settlement agreeing to the purchase of the Harrison power station should not be approved and that the companies’ petition should be denied in its entirety. WV-CAG argues that the price that ratepayers are being asked to pay for Harrison is still way too high and that acquiring the plant will increase long-term price risks for ratepayers. More
