Health Care Repeal Roller Coaster Rolls On
On January 1st it seemed inevitable that we would see the ACA repealed within months, if not weeks. Today, the public has little to no appetite for another attempt at repeal, and the Congress knows it. Health care as a right has entered the discussion, and grassroots groups around the country are growing in size and influence. We should be proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish, for it’s only the beginning of what is possible. More

Morgantown Town Hall Saturday on Federal Healthcare Cuts
Join us Saturday for a town hall about the proposed Trump budget, which makes massive cuts to healthcare and education in order to give huge tax breaks to the wealthy. We’ll hear from policy experts and local organizations about how the budget would affect our community. Senator Shelley Moore Capito and Congressman David McKinley and the media have been invited. It’s critical that we show up to send a strong message to protect essential services for West Virginians. The Fight to Protect Our Care Continues
Thanks to increasing pressure from YOU, the Senate was unable to pass any of their repeal bills. Unfortunately, the fight to protect our care is far from over. The federal budget will be the next focus of attack. Support WV CAG and help us continue the fight for health care for all. More

Budget Battle Over (For Now)
West Virginia dodged the bullet at the last possible moment. However, this is not a budget to celebrate. It cuts higher education and Medicaid and doesn’t raise enough new revenue to keep this annual fight over cuts v. revenue from playing out again next year and into the future. More

Citizen Action Endorses Call for a Fair Budget from Congress in 2018
As work begins on the FY 2018 budget, organizations from West Virginia are calling on Congress to increase investments in public education, affordable housing, health and nutrition, public transit, roads and bridges, clean air, clean water, clean energy, child care, and other means of making investments in communities that also create good jobs. Congress must produce a budget that moves us towards more opportunity for all, that safeguards and advances our basic living standards, and that protects our environment. More

Crossover Chaos! – The Capitol Eye Legislative Update for April 2, 2017
As mentioned last week, Wednesday the 29th was crossover day so the legislature worked through last weekend, started early mornings, and met late into the evenings to get as many of their must pass bills over to the other side. One notable ‘hail-Mary’ passage of a bill was SB 386, the Medical Cannabis bill that was taken up in the final Judiciary meeting and passed out of the Senate during the last floor session. More

Capital Eye Update: Wins and Losses
This past week was a mixed bag of wins and losses at the Legislature. In the House, a broadband access bill was passed, stricter voter ID requirements were rejected and automatic voter registration (AVR) was saved. In the Senate, the tank bill passed, and the Cancer Creek bill is advancing. A medical cannabis bill was passed by the Senate Health and Human Resources (HHR) Committee, but consumer protections are at risk. On the federal scene, a health care disaster was narrowly averted when the House failed to pass TrumpCare. More

Capital Eye: What a Week!
Assuming that a certain number are companions to ones in the other chamber, let’s say that makes over a thousand attempts to add to, change, or eliminate functions of our government. Next Tuesday is the last day to introduce bills in the house. The following Monday the 20th is the last in the Senate. Then the countdown clock begins to the April 8th end of the session. It can’t happen soon enough. More
