Capital Eye Vol. 11 No. 9 – 2018 Legislative Wrap-Up
The 2018 legislative session is FINALLY over, and this is our wrap-up edition of the Capital Eye. Of the 1,778 bills introduced, 260 made it through the sausage grinder to the other end. They all will be signed, ignored by the governor (and become law without his signature), or vetoed. We’re asking him to veto two of them (we’d prefer he veto scores but that’s not going to happen), so read on for why, and make your calls if so moved. A big THANK YOU to all who came to the Capitol, sent emails, and/or made calls on important legislation, and sent in donations of support. As we pivot to federal issues and work to make sure that voters ‘Remember in November’ we hope you can join us for one or more upcoming events. More

We are now halfway through the 2018 legislative session. We started off last week with FirstEnergy filing a notice with the Public Service Commission that it will stop fighting to transfer ownership of the Pleasants Power Plant to its West Virginia utilities. This is a major win for the 530,000 Mon Power and Potomac Edison consumers in West Virginia! Following the water crisis of 2014, the Legislature established the Public Water System Supply Study Commission to provide annual recommendations to protect the state’s drinking water supplies. WV CAG joined allies in urging the Legislature to give the Commission's 2017 report and its recommendations ample consideration in the interest of advancing public policy protective of public health. To mark the fourth anniversary of the water crisis, the WV International Film Festival (WVIFF) is hosting a work in-progress preview of a new film with an important connection to our community. Still Life, is a feature documentary about the chemical spill of 2014, the urban crises it caused, and the foundation of chronic environmental devastation within which it occurred. Click here for showtimes and more information. This is also a reminder that those affected by the water crisis are eligible to file claims as part of the proposed class action settlement of lawsuits filed in response to the chemical spill. We have two rally and march events planned for our area, and for our friends in the eastern panhandle, the main event is just a couple hours away. Next Thursday, May 4th, we will rally inside the Capitol for a budget that protects West Virginia’s families from drastic budget cuts and tax increases on those of us least able to afford it. As mentioned last week, Wednesday the 29th was crossover day so the legislature worked through last weekend, started early mornings, and met late into the evenings to get as many of their must pass bills over to the other side. One notable ‘hail-Mary’ passage of a bill was SB 386, the Medical Cannabis bill that was taken up in the final Judiciary meeting and passed out of the Senate during the last floor session. More
