The Senate is expected for vote on the Farm Bill this week. Join today's national call-in day to protect SNAP benefit levels and eligibility for those struggling to put food on the table. Urge your Senators to vote to protect and strengthen SNAP, to vote “YES” on the Senate Agriculture Committee version of the Farm Bill (S. 3042), and to vote “NO” on any and all harmful amendments that would cut or weaken SNAP. We're hosting our annual awards dinner and fundraiser Friday, June 1st at the Charleston Woman’s Club (1600 Virginia Street). Here are a few the items that will be in our silent auction. Advocacy Letter CAG May 21, 2018
Consumer, Civil Rights, Community Groups Oppose HR 4439 and Sham Rent-a-Bank Payday Lending
In a letter to the House Financial Service Committee, 120 consumer, civil rights, labor, community and legal services organizations including WV CAG voiced their opposition to HR 4439 (Hollingsworth), the so-called Modernizing Credit Opportunities Act. The bill would allow payday lenders to use the fine print of loan terms and sham rent-a-bank arrangements to make loans at 100% to 400% APR or higher in states where those rates are illegal. The bill would undercut the historic power of the states to protect people from dangerous, usurious loans. More

In a last-ditch effort to revive the bill, House Speaker Ryan filed a motion to reconsider. This request for a new vote on the Farm Bill expires tomorrow (Tuesday). Please call West Virginia Reps. David McKinley, Alex Mooney and Evan Jenkins, today at 1-888-398-8702. Urge them to reconsider their support for the bill if it comes up for another vote. More

House Farm Bill Should Protect SNAP and Health Care Rather Than Attacking Our Most Vulnerable
In response to the partisan vote in the U.S. House of Representatives on a version of the Farm Bill that includes new restrictions and cuts to the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP), Health Care for America Now released a statement calling on lawmakers to continue to reject partisan bills that cut food assistance and threaten health care, and develop a bipartisan measure that recognizes the importance of ensuring people have enough food to eat. More

The partisan Republican farm bill isn’t fooling anyone: punishing kids, seniors, people with disabilities and low wage workers won’t get people back to work or help the economy just like tax breaks for the rich haven’t created jobs or helped the middle class. Instead, the current Republican SNAP proposals are designed to shrink the food stamp program so that Republicans can free up more money to pay for their massive tax giveaway. More

Early Voting Starts Today – Check Out Our New App to Help Inform Your Vote
Today, the first day of early voting, WV Citizen Action Education Fund (WV CAEF), our 501c3 sister organization, is excited to announce a new resource for helping voters identify candidates and issues they support with a new, easy to use election app called BallotReady. The tool also helps users to find their polling place (including early voting locations), make a plan to vote, easily save, and be reminded of the information prior to and on Election Day. Remember, when you go to the polls, West Virginia’s new voter ID law is now in effect and everyone must show some form of ID. Click here to learn more about the app and the new voter ID requirement. On the first day of early voting, WV Citizen Action Education Fund (WV CAEF), our 501c3 sister organization, is excited to announce a new resource for helping voters identify candidates and issues they support with a new, easy to use election app called BallotReady. BallotReady is a non-partisan civic engagement tool that enables users to find comprehensive ballot information for their own voting precinct. The tool displays candidate bios, stances, endorsements, and relevant news all in one place; and helps users to find their polling place, make a plan to vote, easily save, and be reminded of the information prior to and on Election Day.
