Dead Election Bills More Notable Than Ones That Passed
100+ bills related to elections were introduced this session. Of those, only 6 made it to the Governor’s desk. With the trend of state lawmakers limiting voting access and making it harder for eligible Americans to vote continuing around the country, we’re fortunate that no voter suppression bills passed. More

Join WV Citizen Action and partners for a series of webinars focused on challenges to our democracy and the actions we can take to protect our freedom to vote and hold those in power accountable. For our first “Lunch Out Loud” on July 28, Atiba Ellis, Professor of Law at Case Western Reserve University School of Law, and Anthony Majestro, a Charleston attorney with experience in election law, will discuss recent decisions by the US Supreme Court that affect voting rights, and what they mean for ballot access in West Virginia. The conversation will be moderated by former Secretary of State Natalie Tennant. More

WV CAG & WV Citizens for Clean Elections Support the Freedom to Vote Act
WV CAG and WV Citizens for Clean Elections joined other members of the Declaration for American Democracy Coalition in sending letters of support to our to our House allies in support of the Freedom to Vote Act (FTVA) and in opposition to the "American Confidence in Elections" (ACE) Act. You can read our letter below ahead of the FTVA's reintroduction. To fortify free and fair elections and help get big, secret money out of politics, Congress must pass the Freedom to Vote Act. More

The Senate Judiciary has referred three bills to its Elections and Public Integrity Subcommittee. The Senate Judiciary Committee has also advanced two bills that would decrease transparency of political spending. The House Committee on Political Subdivisions has advanced three bills. Plus judicial redistricting is underway. More

Ten days into the 2023 legislative, more than 50 bills related to elections have been introduced. Two have traction, and action is needed to keep HB 2244 off the House Judiciary Committee agenda. Related to elections, we would be remiss if we didn’t acknowledge Saturday's anniversary of the US Supreme Court’s devastating Citizens United decsion, the role of dark money in shifting the balance of the Court to the right, and it's impact on our fundamental rights. More

Capital Eye Vol. 16, No. 1 – Legislative Update Week 1: What’s the Rush?
The legislative session started out with a BANG on day one as the Senate leadership promptly used their super majority to suspend the rules, ram through 23 bills and send them to the House. The House is moving mostly at the normal pace, but their Finance committee pulled a fast one on Thursday and added the governor’s 50% personal income tax cut to their agenda at the last minute and passed it out to the floor.
